April 16, 2026—Washington, DC. The American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. This is a critical and long-overdue step towards halting a dangerous escalation that has inflicted significant civilian harm, widespread destruction, and large-scale displacement across Lebanon.
ATFL expresses its appreciation to President Donald Trump for his leadership in helping secure this ceasefire. We welcome today’s engagement at the highest levels, including the first phone call between President Trump and President Joseph Aoun, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s call with President Aoun. Sustained dialogue among all parties is essential to advancing a more peaceful and secure region, and the Administration’s engagement at the senior-most levels is an important step in that direction.
ATFL commends the sustained diplomatic efforts that made this outcome possible, particularly the leadership of the United States, represented by Ambassador Michel Issa, in bringing the parties to this point, as well as Secretary Rubio’s role in elevating and convening these discussions. We also commend the leadership and determination of President Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in advancing direct talks over the past six months.
While this temporary ceasefire is an essential breakthrough, it must serve as the beginning of a diplomatic process. Consolidating the ceasefire will require robust mechanisms for deconfliction, monitoring, and enforcement to prevent a return to hostilities.
At the same time, long-term lasting stability will depend on advancing a clear, state-led pathway that restores Lebanese sovereignty and addresses the presence of Hezbollah outside the authority of the state. The scale of displacement and destruction underscores the urgent need to mobilize coordinated international support for Lebanon’s stabilization and recovery. Strengthening Lebanese state institutions, including the Lebanese Armed Forces, will be critical to ensuring that this ceasefire translates into meaningful and lasting progress.
Amb. (ret.) Ed Gabriel, President of ATFL underscored that “This is an historic opportunity for Lebanon and Israel. While significant challenges remain, this opening must be seized to advance a new era of peace and stability in the region.”
ATFL calls on all parties to build on this moment. A sustained commitment to diplomacy, state-to-state engagement, and de-escalation is essential to securing long-term peace and stability for Lebanon and the region.
