The American Task Force on Lebanon applauds recent actions by US allies in the Gulf that complement current US policy toward Lebanon.

The American Task Force on Lebanon recently facilitated two consecutive delegation visits to Lebanon, which included bipartisan Congressional staffers as well as business and civic leaders from the Lebanese American community. The delegations met with leading officials of the Lebanese government, parliament, military, business community, and civil society. They came home with a better understanding of the opportunities and growing challenges facing Lebanon, following a destructive war, which has resulted in several thousand dead, many of whom are children, and more than 1.2 million displaced.

The American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) commends the United States, Lebanon and Israel for their continued commitment to negotiations, the next round of which are to be held tomorrow in Rome. These talks will build on the positive momentum created by the Trilateral Framework signed in late June and come on the heels of a historic meeting between Presidents Trump and Aoun.

Presidents Trump and Aoun will meet at the White House tomorrow in a historic summit, the first such encounter in almost two decades.

This is a culmination of a bold initiative taken by the President of Lebanon to call for direct negotiations with Israel, and a firm decision by the government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to demand the disarmament of all non-state actors, including Hezbollah.

ATFL supports the amendment to H.R. 9807, offered by Rep. Jayapal of Washington, which would prevent the sale or transfer of white phosphorus to Israel. The IDF’s use of white phosphorus in Lebanon has caused undue harm to civilians, the local economy, and the environment. It also has the potential to undermine the current US-mediated negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.

ATFL continues to support the Trump Administration’s efforts to advance direct negotiations and de-escalation, as stated in the Trilateral Framework signed at the State Department on June 26. ATFL believes that measures aimed at protecting civilians are needed to complement US efforts to build a durable path toward peace and prosperity.
