April 14, 2026—Washington, DC. The American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) welcomes the launch of direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington and applauds the Trump administration for prioritizing them. ATFL also commends the leadership of President Joseph Aoun for originally proposing these talks some six months ago. Taking place amid active conflict, these discussions represent an urgent and important diplomatic opening to shift the dynamics from escalation toward a state-led process of de-escalation and stabilization.
ATFL underscores the importance of advancing a Lebanon track that stands on its own merits, independent of broader regional negotiations. At the same time, addressing the role of Hezbollah, which continues to operate outside the authority of the Lebanese state, will be essential to achieving any durable outcome.
While expectations should remain realistic, near-term success should be defined by the establishment of de-escalation and disarmament mechanisms, sustained channels of communication, and initial confidence-building measures. These steps are critical to preventing further deterioration, creating space for a longer-term political process, and charting a path toward peace.
The United States has a vital role to play in sustaining this process. Continued US engagement, close coordination with international partners, and continued support for Lebanese state institutions—particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces—will be essential to translating this diplomatic opening into meaningful progress. At the same time, the scale of displacement and widespread destruction across the country underscores the urgency of mobilizing sustained international support for Lebanon’s reconstruction and recovery.
ATFL encourages all parties to seize this moment and advance a path grounded in diplomacy, state-to-state engagement, and long-term stability. Failure to do so risks a return to conflict, with far-reaching consequences for Lebanon and the region.
