July 6, 2026 – During a virtual briefing with ATFL, President Joseph Aoun outlined Lebanon’s position on the negotiations and the path forward, stressing the need to pressure Israel to withdraw from the areas it occupies in Lebanon. He said that continued occupation undermines the legitimacy of the Lebanese state, prevents the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and obstructs the foundations of a just and lasting peace.
President Aoun also emphasized that the Lebanese Army and security forces are the cornerstone of stability and security in the south, and essential to the return of Lebanese citizens to their towns and homes. He reaffirmed that civil war has no place in Lebanon, that negotiations remain the only viable path after war failed to achieve its stated goals, and that any suspension of claims between Lebanon and Israel during negotiations does not mean abandoning them.
ATFL welcomes President Aoun’s clear focus on sovereignty, state authority, and diplomacy. His remarks reflect the urgent need for sustained U.S. engagement to secure Israeli withdrawal, support the deployment and capacity of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and advance a negotiated path that protects Lebanon’s independence and strengthens its institutions. ATFL will continue to support U.S. efforts that help Lebanon restore full sovereignty, avoid renewed conflict, and move toward stability, peace, and prosperity.
