Presidents Trump and Aoun will meet at the White House tomorrow in a historic summit, the first such encounter in almost two decades.
This is a culmination of a bold initiative taken by the President of Lebanon to call for direct negotiations with Israel, and a firm decision by the government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to demand the disarmament of all non-state actors, including Hezbollah.
This summit comes after six direct negotiation sessions between Lebanon and Israel in which an understanding has been reached on a process for the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, the total disarmament of Hezbollah and the need to prioritize the return of civilians to their homes in the south of Lebanon with support to rebuild their lives.
We commend the leadership of President Trump for this historic meeting to ensure that the negotiations between Lebanon and Israel continue on a positive track and we hope that the meeting tomorrow will expedite an end of conflict between the parties and set the stage for peaceful relations between Lebanon and its neighbors.
