World Environment Day

This World Environment Day, the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) is proud to highlight the breathtaking natural environment of Lebanon and the organizations working tirelessly to protect it. At the forefront of this effort is the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association (LMTA), an organization that manages the first long-distance hiking trail in Lebanon.

A Journey Through Lebanon’s Ecosystems

The Lebanon Mountain Trail (LMT) spans over 470 kilometers, extending from Andqet in the north to Marjaayoun in the south. Along this route, the trail transects 76 towns and villages, with altitudes ranging from 570 to 2,073 meters above sea level. Hikers on the LMT experience the incredible diversity of Lebanon's ecosystems. The path crosses a World Heritage Site, the Qadisha Valley, as well as three major nature reserves: the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, the Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve, and the Al Shouf Biosphere Reserve.

The Mission of the LMTA

Established in 2007, the LMTA works to develop and protect the trail while promoting environmentally and socially responsible tourism. Their mission is deeply rooted in safeguarding the natural, cultural, and historical heritage found along the trailside. By maintaining these paths, the LMT showcases the determination of the Lebanese people to conserve their unique environmental heritage.

Empowering Rural Communities

Beyond environmental conservation, the LMTA plays a critical role in supporting Lebanon’s rural economy. The association's programs are geared toward improving economic opportunities for rural and often marginalized communities. The trail has become a tangible rural tourism product, empowering local residents to participate in trail-related services. In just one month, trail users and thru-hikers can inject more than $100,000 into trailside villages, directly benefiting local guesthouses, guides, transportation services, and small shops.

This World Environment Day, we celebrate the LMTA for bringing communities closer together and championing environmental sustainability.
